The exhibition ‘Encyclopaedia of Photography’ presents 250 of the most notable Russian photographs of the 20th century at the Pavilion of Radio Electronics at VDNKh. Tasked with creating a classic linear narrative through time periods and genres, the works were grouped by authors, whose names are indicated by tall bookmark signage.
The temporary partitions create simple geometric forms which stand independently of the building shell. In contrast to the heaviness of the pavilion’s architecture, they are demonstrably light in structure, which is revealed by cutting away and ‘lifting’ the surfaces. The resulting bold geometry in light shades of grey appears to float in its dark setting.
