Similar to a person’s fingerprints, every settlement has its own identity.<\/p>
Within the network of the Faroe islands, each town has a distinct personality. The recently undertaken development of infrastructure on the islands will promote cultural exchange between its towns. This will result in a demand for interrelated community centers, each defining the identity of its town.<\/p>
The Fingerprints project is an imprint- reflection of the town Klaksvik, with its reserved nordic beauty, strong winds and people, who mostly consist of fishermen in many generations.<\/p>
The project unites four distinct areas — a community centre, residential area, hotel and transport hub.<\/p>
The community centre is an artificial green hill, a new form of town square, surrounded by public buildings. The town centre is completely pedestrian. All transport is concentrated next to the Klaksvik marina, on the site of a former parking lot, and includes a bus terminal, parking, and ferry quay. The hill will provide refuge from strong winds coming in from the bay during large public events. Towards the bay, it will form an amphitheatre for hosting festivals and concerts.<\/p>
The interior of the hill will enclose wide streets with shops, cafes and a marketplace. New buildings will reflect the beauty of northern nature, employing local techniques in timber and stone construction, their outlines echoing the surrounding landscape.<\/p>
